Standard Life Press Release

What does Brexit result mean for your investments?

As you’ll already know, the UK has voted to leave the European Union (EU). The result was close with 52% voting to leave and 48% voting to remain. You’ll want to know what happens next and what this could mean for your investments.

Brexit: what now?

We expect little will change in the coming months. It will be at least two years before the UK actually leave the EU and it could be longer. Up until then the UK will continue to live by EU treaties and laws as it negotiates an orderly withdrawal.

Brexit: what does this all mean for your investments?

Market falls and the news headlines that come with them can be worrying. But it’s times like these when it’s crucial to remember the two most important rules of investing: take a long-term view and diversify. Markets go up and down all the time. Volatility like we’re seeing around the EU referendum is to be expected. It’s a significant event.

Why you need to take a long-term view

If you sell during a market fall, you risk locking in your losses and missing out when markets recover. History tells us that markets recover in the long term, but there are no guarantees, so bear this in mind before you consider cashing in your investments, and there may be other implications, such as tax.

Do you need to do anything?

What action you need to take, if any, depends on how you’re invested. Try to take a step back from the short-term noise and remember the importance of taking a long-term view. Think about why you invested in the first place and make sure those reasons haven’t changed. To make sure your choices still meet your needs and your original investment rationale you may wish to speak to your financial adviser.
